Reeves Callaway founded Callaway Cars in 1977 in Old Lyme, Connecticut, initially building turbocharger kits before pivoting to Corvette in 1987. That pivot proved defining: Callaway earned a factory RPO option code from Chevrolet (B2K), making it one of the very few aftermarket companies formally integrated into a major manufacturer's order system. In 1988, the Callaway Sledgehammer Corvette set a production-car top speed record of 254.76 mph that stood for 22 years.
