Burkard Bovensiepen founded Alpina in Buchloe in 1965, initially developing a dual-carburetor upgrade for the BMW 1500 as a side business to his family's typewriter company. Alpina became Germany's only independently recognized automobile manufacturer (as distinct from a tuner) in 1978, building its vehicles on BMW production lines with unique engines, chassis tuning and interiors. BMW Group completed its acquisition of the brand in 2022, with full integration planned for 2026.
